Fred Peterson sent this wonderful close-up of his town:
May I share the Marquette, KS story? During the past 1 and 1/2 years we have a new city brochure, new Welcome banners on our downtown streetlight poles, 30 metal posters on second story buildings of past national historic figures, dedicated a new 9 basket disc golf course, planted new trees along the hike and bike trail and north entrance to the city, established a new city park west of the rodeo grounds complete with floating fountain that is lighted at night, have a new gazebo on our nature trail, currently an artist is painting a new mural on a concrete wall at the north entrance of the Pioneer Trail, Mid Kansas Coop has built a new grain facility office and 2 new grain silos, and new storage sheds and some RV sites are under construction on the north side of town. The population of the town is 643. May I share that information with the folks. Also we are told that 2 new houses may be built in the Westridge Housing Addition this summer in our Free Land Program. A community orchard has been planted. The pond with the floating fountain has been stocked with fish. We recently took part in the KSU First Impressions project where you are matched with a town of your size and respectively visit each others towns and turn in your “impression” of that town as visitors see you. KSU then shares those results with the respective towns at a public meeting. I’m out of breath tonight. Come and visit us.
That’s a pretty exhausting list of accomplishments for a town of 600 in just a year and a half! Congratulations to Marquette, Kansas!

What a great story. Shows what a “can-do” attitude can do. Keep it up and keep reporting back.

Tough winter in our small town. Affected many Business’. Memorial weekend produced outstanding sales and hundreds of people to the area. We sold 3 handmade dining tables in less than a week. It was a great kick off to summer and energizing.

I atteneded the NDDC semi annual meeting- as usual, was the only one to represent a town UNDER 10k… (37 if a far cry.) But I did make my point about the small towns very rarely ever attending any Downtown events, trainings, etc even though they are welcome to come. It was decided that there will now be a dedicated effort to get the word out to them, make the entry fee a sliding scale and even offer scholarships to attend. So yeah!!
In other news- Regan, ND (pop 37) is in full swing preparations for the 3rd annual Halloween party at the old school. The first one was mainly folks with local ties, last year there were so many people the gym couldn’t hold them! And McClusky ND (550) is starting a car show this year- Without the ‘boards’ involvement! ;)

Thanks for your ongoing work standing up for small towns, Katy. And cheers to Regan and McClusky for their projects!
