I am writing to confess my undying love for rural libraries! In our very rural community, our library is one of our only community spaces. It offers not only books, but Internet, computer access, great conversations, and more.
Recently, we had the opportunity to start a new farmers market in the shade of the trees right in front of our library. It is a win-win partnership. We also just received funding to host a series of “maker” activities and events at our library. We’ll be creating kits that community members can check out with information and materials to do things like robotics, crafts, digital photography and movie making, and more.
Our library and our librarian are gifts to our community, and we love all benefit!

Yay, rural libraries! I love hearing how rural librarians are playing a key role in creating the kind of town we want to live in.

Kudos to the rural libraries!! Love that ‘brag’!
I am writing just say keep after it! If we continue talking about our rural communities and visiting back and forth with ideas and cheerleading, we all do better.
I recently went on a road trip to Denver and back and made it a point to stop and visit a number of the small communities along the way there and back to find the hidden gems within them. So much more than meets the eye!

Way to travel in style, Katy!

I’m super excited because we have our first community meeting planned to brainstorm ideas to get people to come to town, but also to brainstorm ideas of businesses we need and can feasibly support and in the end, hopefully fill some of our empty buildings! Here’s hoping we have people show up!!

Great project, Katy F.! I hope you’ll get good turnout and lots of participation! Even a few people make a big difference in a small town.

A group of residents does downtown beautification with hanging baskets and street flower pots; landscape plantings; benches and bike racks, all funded by donations, and regular cleanup efforts in public spaces.
To celebrate National Police Week, our ‘Shop Local’ group tied blue ribbons around all the light poles in our downtown, and around City Hall. Residents are buying blue light bulbs for their porch lights to light all week in tribute, with proceeds in bulb sales helping the Safety Town program. Free Coffee for Cops all week at 2 local spots, funded by a resident; a local caterer is furnishing lunch one day for all the police force.

I love these community projects, Judy! Your people are making it the kind of town you’d like to live in.
