One of our traditions at Small Biz Survival is the Brag Basket. The basket is always free and open all weekend, this one May 27-29, 2011.
Even though I call this the Brag Basket, it’s not really about bragging. It’s about sharing. It’s here so you can introduce yourself, share some good news, or congratulate a friend. Don’t hold back because of that word, “brag.” When you hold back, you hide your good news and accomplishments that might inspire others.
Speak up and add yourself or another deserving soul in the comments. We all cheer, and everyone feels great. It lets you meet each other a bit. Reading each others’ stories brings us a bit closer to being a community.
How does it work? You write a comment on this post, email me, tweet me, or comment on Facebook. You tell something great about your week, or you give applause to someone who did good stuff this week. Or you celebrate something wonderful that you tried that failed.
This is not an ad. (I delete the ads.) It’s a conversation with friends. So jump in. And remember to cheer for each other.

Becky-
Well, I am going to break a rule here and give myself a big pat on the back to be a living dinosaur and still learning!
KSBI asked me to do some patriotic music for their Memorial Day Oklahoma Live show with Lyn Hester. Well, I really sweated that, because it was so important to do a ‘good job’ – and I am not really magnetized to the usual razzle-dazzle of Sousa Stars and Stripes (I love hearing it by a marching band, but trying to emulate it is not my thing…) So this cost me a lot of soul-searching, and I came up with the simple notion that I was there to move the heart to contemplate the beauty of America and the memories of those who paved the way for our present liberty. After the show, a veteran of the 2nd world war told me he was very moved by my music, that it brought him back memories. I wanted only to perform some small service, he assured me I had. It was really nice.

Wayne, it is the first rule of the Brag Basket that you are encouraged to share about yourself! Good work. You have definitely performed more than a small service.

By the way, you all can see and hear Wayne’s performance on KSBI TV.

Bragging on @Nanna_J for working on me to improve my eating habits.
It’s having an effect. Down 16 lbs so far.
Not that easy though, as we’re also working to include more walking.
Cheers,
Todd

Bragging on St. Louis’ Mayor Francis Slay.
Politics aside, this man keeps it real. This weekend he’s keeping focused on the tragedy in Joplin, MO. He’s working it via directing efforts, encouraging other group efforts, mobilizing his staff, and even through his Twitter stream.
Real man, keeping the focus on the real world. Can be found at @MayorSlay.
Cheers,
Todd

Murrow’s FrameArt LLC has been open since Dec.’09 and we have just hired a part-time worker for the summer. For us, that marks a ‘big step’ and is an indicator that we’re enjoying some growth!
Becky McCray says
Todd, cheers to both you and NannaJ! Glad she’s helping you move ahead.
And applause to Mayor Slay! Thanks, Todd, for sharing that.
Rod, congratulations! I’m proud of what you’ve accomplished. I’m sure you’ve learned a lot, as well.

I am bragging on my hubs. Undaunted by over 18 months of unemployment we held hands and jumped off a cliff (figuratively of course). We cashed in all our chips, moved our family from Chicago to CA and just had a Memorial Day Grand Opening at our new small business. Merced Gardens & Nursery center. Our motto: sow, reap, share, repeat! Our goal is to be part of the solution by creating jobs in a community that was hard hit by the downturn in the economy. Our vision includes helping local non-profits by hosting special events, training and mentoring for teens and young adults with disabilites, and working with other small business owners in the community with cooperative ventures.
We have landed….and we are just getting started. Thank you Becky for having this forum. What a great hand up!
Becky McCray says
Stef, congratulations to you both! Here’s to a long and successful run in the beautiful world of gardens and growing a community!

Julie sent me this by email last weekend, but I just now found it:
Our small town is struggling and some of the merchants are working really hard to make changes that will hopefully attract more tourism. Although it was really difficult to talk the powers that be into it, a couple of us have fundraised enough money to buy brackets and flower baskets to hang on light poles downtown. It was a hard battle but we kept plugging along and the baskets will be ready to hang in a week or two. I’m proud of our determination and can’t wait to see them hanging in our beautiful town!
Julie Hatzell
Julie, I hope you’ll be back this weekend with new photos of the proud new flower baskets!
