A memorial Brag Basket

By Small Biz Survival

Even though I call this the Brag Basket, it’s not really about bragging. It’s about sharing. I started this so you can introduce yourself, share some good news, or congratulate a friend.

Dad in 2008The basket is open all weekend, from October 1-3, 2010. Because we are having a memorial service for my father this weekend, I invite you to share a memory of someone important to you, as well as any regular brags.

Speak up and add yourself or another deserving soul in the comments. We all cheer, and everyone feels great. It lets you meet each other a bit. Reading each others’ stories brings us a bit closer to being a community.

How does it work? You write a comment on this post, email me, tweet me, or comment on Facebook. You tell something great about your week, or you give applause to someone who did good stuff this week. Or you celebrate something wonderful that you tried that failed.

This is not an ad. (I delete the ads.) It’s a conversation with friends. So jump in. And remember to cheer for each other.

    Becky,
We’ve shared dad stories – and I get how the process of your father’s passing was not a walk in the park. May the day to day memories be pleasant and may you take comfort in our family and friends.

Many cool things are happening in Hampton Iowa – and I’ve had the honor of playing a part in the production of it all. This week we wrapped up our band shell fundraiser with going over goal by $18000. We raised $108,000 – and now a touchstone in the community remains. We’ve made a video and invited Oprah to come celebrate with us in Hampton. It’s getting great coverage! I organized a group of women into the Wellness Warriors and we saw Frank Ferrante (live in person) and his movie May I Be Frank.

I’ve come to the conclusion that we get to live each day exactly as we want. So why not make it spectacular?
Much love for your and yours –
    @debworks

My “brag” is to congratulate all of the small business around the country who jumped on a “Call to Action” this week and prevented an attempted hijacking of small business interests by a misguided elected official.

The short version is that a simple Continuing Resolution for many SBA programs that was approved by the Senate and supported by House Leadership was denied a House vote by a single legislator’s personal interests. But, after hundreds of phone calls and faxes, sufficient pressure was brought to bear to turn the situation around, and the SBA’s programs were continued for a few more months. (If you’re interested in reading the story of what happened, peruse http://www.SBIRplaybook.com)

So my “brag” is that small businesses do have a big voice — if we all shout together! It’s through forums like this website that the word gets out. Thank you, Becky, for being such a valuable resource.

Hi Becky, You know Mr. Bruce and I will be thinking of you, your Mom, and your family this weekend. I read the memorial piece that was online. Your family are all remarkable. Bruce liked the part about your Dad being a pilot since Bruce also flew.

Although my own Dad has been gone many years, I can still see his hardworking hands, scarred and strong working on my car. My Dad was like yours, a hard working guy all his life.

Kudos to your dad for his part in molding and leading you, so you could do this for others, Becky!

One really solid fail this week – had an anxious group of business women just waiting to hear about the power of social media they could use – and the wifi I was assured was functional, wasn’t. So, instead of a demonstration (more fun), it ended up being more of a lecture (boo hiss); the audience was still appreciative and received good information. But I was disappointed because I planned for a WOW and got a wimper. If it inspired folks to go and play, I’ll be happy! @ProfS

Kathy, thank you for the kindness. And congratulations on providing good info, even when it didn’t work the way you wanted. Cheers to you!

    Hi Becky. My sincere condolences.

I just now read the news – I have been way behind in my RSS reads.

I’m glad that your dad’s struggle is over. When my mom died in 2009, it was happy-sad for all of her kids. We greatly miss her but were glad that her physical pain was over.

I am so thankful for my mom – and the huge impact she had and still has on my life. I know you feel the same way about your dad.

    Our prayers are with you!
