Do small towns need websites

By Becky McCray

I was disappointed I couldn’t find more info about a small town I wrote about in http://eldergeneration.net. Even small towns need websites.

@Miss_Dazey

I don’t care how small your town is, you have visitors and tourists. If you aren’t online, you are ignoring them. Some of them could be writing about you, promoting you to more potential visitors. Why wouldn’t you help them out with some basic info online?

    I am amazed by the number of communities that have Main Street programs, Better Hometown Programs, and Downtown Development Associations, and yet they do a horrible job of letting them be found.

    In the past week I have attempted to locate those that had no web presence, had voice mail systems that were full and unable to accept messages, those that had a wrong number on their website, or simply had no voice mail system.

    It makes you wonder how they get anyone to respond to their promotional events.

    Tom, you’re absolutely right. It sounds basic, but it’s so often overlooked.

    I couldn’t agree more! I’m from a very rural area made up of nothing but small towns. They have some of the best food, best summer festivals, but nobody knows about them unless you happen to get the local weekly paper. Your post has inspired me to try to help them! Thanks!

    Exactly! Lorilee, lots of folks love exploring small towns, but it’s tough to get those towns online.

    I ran into your website. I am on the board of trustees for a small Colorado town. We are having an oil boom in our area and we would like to get a web presence for our little town but we have no money. Can you suggest anything for us. We are looking to grow our area and bring in more families.
    Thanks, Marilee

    Marilee, your town already has a web presence to build on. Start with Wikipedia and add updated information. Start a Facebook Page and share information there. Start your own blog at WordPress.com or Blogger.com and share all over it. It does not take much cash, but it does take work.
