Brag Basket

By Small Biz Survival

Today, I’m going first in the Brag Basket!

Sheila and I have done it! We finished Tourism Currents, we finished on time, and we have a bunch of new folks joining up! Yay!

We launched Tourism Currents to help tourism professionals learn the new social media tools. It’s completely tailored to tourism and includes six months of lessons based on what you actually do in the tourism business. Feel free to share it with a tourism professional you know who is looking to learn.

And that’s what the Brag Basket it all about. This is where you can share your projects andaccomplishments. You can also cheer for other people, give shout outs, congratulate, and even give someone a well-deserved pat on the back.

The Brag Basket is open all weekend. (September 11-13, 2009 – I’mputting dates because sometimes a person will comment on an old basketby mistake.) Drop by any time and leave your good news in the comments.

TheBrag Basket is open for everyone, whether from a small town, a bigcity, or anywhere in the world. (But it’s true that I love small townbrags!)

Will you put something in the Brag Basket this week? Youcan brag on a friend, your own project, yourself, others, anything!Make it personal, and not just an ad. You don’t need specialpermission, and you don’t have to be from a small town. Just leave acomment right here. There’s no deadline, so you can brag anytime duringthe weekend, and I’ll open a fresh Brag Basket each Friday.

    Hi Becky,

Congrats to you and Sheila. Sounds like a great way to help lots of folks.

It’s wonderful that you’re having people sign up already.

    OK, I’ll go next.

Congratulations Becky, on Tourism Currents. Tourism is a major industry here in Tuolumne County and I would love to see them start using social media. I’ll spread the word where I can.

This week, we signed a contract to redesign the web site for the Area 12 Agency on Aging, a site that we built originally seven years ago. Looking back, there are so many areas to improve. The new version will include a blog.

On a more esoteric note, a couple of weeks ago we launched Classical Chinese Medicine for Healing, written by a local acupuncturist, Chinese medicine practitioner and teacher. Check it out for a very alternative view of health care reform.

Sheryl, Congratulations! I just found your tweet about this late last night, so I’m glad you came back here with it. You have a terrific target, and I hope you’ll be hugely successful!

Greg, thanks! I love those two projects! Thanks so much for sharing them, and congratulations. :)

I have two items this week.

First off, in my little town of Dunlap, Iowa, local entrepreneurs Brad and Lisa Gross have purchased the old IOOF building which had been converted to a department store in the 1980s or earlier. Recently it hasn’t been used for anything but storage. They are in the process of renovating it, including a nice restoration of the facade. They will turn it into office space. A great shot in the arm for our Main Street.

Second, the town of my youth, Soldier, Iowa, just finished their 11th annual Labor Day Poker Run and this year’s event was the largest so far. A great way to end summer, even if (like me) you’re not a biker. And what a great “stimulus package” for the local economy.

Shannon, it’s always great to hear that another downtown building is being brought back to service. Congrats to the towns of Dunlap and Soldier!

Eight of my innkeeper friends have banded together to begin a recipe blog at http://www.bedandbreakfastfoodie.com. They are great and inventive cooks to begin with and exhibit a great sense of humor. Where else would you find a group referring to themselves as “eight broads?” They are gearing up for Facebook and Twitter. It’s a great collaberation with a big bonus: you can make any recipe for company without needing to practice it first.

In addition to being great cooks, these women have my respect for being astute business people. Our industry is tougher than most travelers would imagine but they have thrived and strived to keep their businesses and lives as fresh as possible.

Innkeeper, that is a fun, and useful project! Congrats to all the “Eight Broads”!
